On The Porch: A Tribute to Stephen Sondheim

On December 5, 2021 singers from across Bucks County and beyond convened to perform a moving tribute to Stephen Sondheim. The performance took place on the front porch of Oscar Hammerstein's farmhouse where Stephen Sondheim was mentored in the art of lyric writing by the great Oscar Hammerstein. This flash-mob choir performed, Mark Brymer's arrangement of "No One Is Alone" from the musical Into the Woods. Video footage was provided by BrightHousePhotagraphy.

Memories of Water: Vocal Recital

“Water has the ability to both free and claim a soul. I chose the title “Memories of Water” for my honors voice recital because water evokes emotions and personifies wisdom, power, chaos, and freedom. The music I will be performing today has many references to various forms of water such as rivers, fog, and the sea. The Loire River in Poulenc’s Deux Poemes has borne witness to countless battles and bloodshed. Water takes on a more ominous and mysterious form through the eerie fog of Nebbie and the enchanting and deadly ocean of The Seal Man. The art song about the river nymph Daphne reveals the beauty, desirability, and chaos of water.”

A Soul in the Wind: Flute Recital

I believe music is deeply connected to the soul. I chose the title “A Soul in the Wind” for my honors flute recital because I have always loved being in nature and many of the pieces that I enjoy have a natural element or theme. The music I will be performing today has many melodic references to soaring and flying that brought wind to the forefront of my mind. The ‘Soul’ in the wind could be the thunderbird from Katherine Hoover’s Spirit Flight soaring over the western landscape, a symbol of strength and protection. It could also be the wondering and passionate soul expressed in Griffes’ Poem or the youthful soul of Icarus in Feathers and Wax. Through this music, I sometimes feel that my own soul plays in the freedom of the wind with these melodies and characters. Hopefully, these beautiful pieces will give listeners the same taste of what it is like to fly.
