A Soul in the Wind: Flute Recital

I believe music is deeply connected to the soul. I chose the title “A Soul in the Wind” for my honors flute recital because I have always loved being in nature and many of the pieces that I enjoy have a natural element or theme. The music I will be performing today has many melodic references to soaring and flying that brought wind to the forefront of my mind. The ‘Soul’ in the wind could be the thunderbird from Katherine Hoover’s Spirit Flight soaring over the western landscape, a symbol of strength and protection. It could also be the wondering and passionate soul expressed in Griffes’ Poem or the youthful soul of Icarus in Feathers and Wax. Through this music, I sometimes feel that my own soul plays in the freedom of the wind with these melodies and characters. Hopefully, these beautiful pieces will give listeners the same taste of what it is like to fly.
